Doors to the past

"Doors to The Past" is a selection of photographs taken in the United Arab Emirates spanning 1981 through 2000. All images were taken on a film camera and are my visual record of a vanished street landscape. The evolution of doors from early stages where wooden doors had locks on the outside to the metal doors and their elaborate decorative pattern depicts a change in the way we utilised these entry doors; I have witnessed doors designed to be inviting you in, and the ones fending you off. "Behind every door, there is a story."

  • Numbers, letters, signs and symbols all waiting to be photographed. The owner watched me photograph the door and invited me in. "Maybe a cup of mint tea, maybe you would like some water, " he asked." "The camera will make my door famous," he chuckled as he poured tea.

  • Strolling down a narrow lane in Al Ain I came upon a couch, a chair and the white wash drying in the sun. I peeked in the door and saw an elderly lady folding the wash. She smiled at me and called out; "take a seat, it's a hot day." I thanked her and returned the smile.

  • For me, it was a labor of love to wander the sandy streets never knowing what I would encounter around each bend. Each day I would  load film in my camera, put another roll in my pocket, clean the lens and start walking. Although all of the doors are no longer standing I still can visualize them and smell the cooking. I hope you enjoy viewing my work as much as I did photographing the doors and producing this book.

Colourful faces

I have always been drawn to people and different faces. The colourful variety of dresses we human beings decorate ourselves with paint a fascinating portrait of our varied and diverse looks. In this context, I travel wherever I have a chance to capture these faces.

Fading Colours

“Fading Colours” inspired me to document the tradition and culture of the UAE and how we, the people of this country, are doing our best to keep them alive as part of our heritage. Modernisation brought prosperity, but we stand to forget our traditions and culture with it. There is so much beauty in the old traditions, and hopefully, this collection will provide a short glimpse into this fading culture.

A Love Affair with Bicycles

“A Love affair with bicycles” was developed as a collection of photographs taken on my journeys worldwide, observing how we take this wonderful creation for granted. Yet, so many are dependent on it, day in, day out.

Many philosophers, artists and politicians have had their say about this apparatus, reflecting their observation, love and affection towards the bicycle.

  • Get a bicycle, you will not regret it if you live, - Mark Twain, “Taming the Bicycle”

  • Consider a man riding a bicycle. Wherever he is, we can say three things about him. We know he got on the bicycle and started to move. We know that at some point he will stop and get off. Most important of all, we know that if at any point between the beginning and the end of his journey he stops moving and does not get off the bicycle he will fall off it. That is a metaphor for the journey through life of any living thing, and I think of any society of living things. - William Golding

  • The bicycle is the perfect transportation to match man’s metabolic energy to the impedance of locomotion. Equipped with this tool, man outstrip the efficiency of not all machines but all other animals as well. ~Ivan Illich

instax meets Polaroid

During 2020-2021, I took up my Polaroid and Instax cameras and decided to photograph the world going through a challenging time due to the pandemic. At times occupied me with recording the mood at home and photographing what I was surrounded with.

This book reflects a collection of such photographs depicting the people and the city going through the time we all experienced something out of the ordinary.

  • Feeling locked in made me aware of elements around me in this confined space.

  • People with no work and not much hope sitting in isolation looking strange

  • Businesses had to struggle as no customers and feeling dejected

Poetic Palm

“Poetic Palm” is inspired by the dramatic increase in the plantation of this magnificent tree throughout UAE and becoming one of the largest producers of dates in the region. All in a short period of 40 years. I have had the pleasure and honour of being here to see the transformation and photograph their progression from different perspectives.

  • the adornment of village farm

  • Standing tall amongst the trees

Dancing with Leica Monochrom

This short essay was created out of a fascination with B&W photography. In the digital world, cameras could not produce that organic look and feel of the films and prints until Leica came out with the first pure digital M called “M monochrom”, later upgraded to M10 Monochrom.

This booklet was developed to collect photographs taken with these unique cameras.
